Origins of the American Curl Cat

In June 1981, on a sunny day in Lakewood, California, an unusual black, silky-furred stray cat with curled ears appeared at the doorstep of Joe and Grace Ruga. Despite Joe’s initial hesitation, Grace decided to care for the stray and named her Shulamith, meaning “dark and beautiful.” This stray cat became the matriarch of all purebred American Curl cats known today.

By December 1981, Shulamith gave birth to her first litter of kittens. Among them, two had her distinctive curled ears. Genetic research confirmed that this ear shape resulted from a dominant gene. Breeders soon began selectively breeding cats with this trait, leading to the establishment of the American Curl as a recognized breed.

The breed gained significant attention in 1983 and was officially accepted by the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA) in 1986. By 1993, it achieved championship status, marking a milestone as one of the few breeds to include both long-haired and short-haired varieties.

Personality and Traits of the American Curl Cat

1. Curious and Playful Nature

American Curl cats are highly inquisitive and enjoy exploring their surroundings. They may tilt their heads adorably when observing something unusual or join you in unpacking groceries with great enthusiasm.

2. Maintains Kitten-Like Habits

These cats often retain their kitten-like behavior throughout their lives. For instance, they may occasionally stick out their tongue while napping, a habit carried over from their early days.

3. Quiet and Well-Mannered

Unlike some breeds, American Curl cats are not vocal or demanding. If they need your attention, they’ll rub against your legs or quietly follow you instead of meowing excessively.

4. Loyal and Affectionate

Known for their love of cuddles, these cats enjoy being held and stroked by their owners. Their gentle and playful nature makes them excellent companions for families and individuals alike.

Unique Physical Features

1. Signature Ears

The defining feature of the American Curl is, of course, its backward-curving ears. Kittens are born with straight ears that begin to curl within 2–10 days. By the time they’re four months old, their ear shape is set, which helps determine their classification as pet-quality, breeding-quality, or show-quality cats.

2. Soft, Silky Coat

Available in both long-haired and short-haired varieties, American Curl cats have a soft, silky coat with minimal undercoat. This makes grooming simple—occasional baths and daily brushing are usually sufficient.

Breeding and Genetic Stability

The American Curl cat originated from the pairing of Shulamith with domestic cats. Over the years, selective breeding has stabilized the curl gene, and the breed now has low susceptibility to genetic disorders. Breeding a Curl with another Curl or a domestic straight-eared cat typically results in litters with at least 50% curled-ear kittens.

Care Tips for American Curl Cats

While their coats are easy to maintain, extra caution is needed when handling their ears. Unlike other breeds, the cartilage in their ears is firmer and more prone to damage if mishandled.

Why American Curl Cats Are Exceptional Pets

  • Enduring Playfulness: They retain their playful kitten-like behavior well into adulthood.
  • Intelligent and Gentle: These cats are intuitive, well-behaved, and never act out without reason.
